From the first minutes of filming Ashley and Miranda, we were charmed by their storytelling. For the summer, these two Lake Placid High School students became intrepid explorers of the Florida scrub. In the tangled thickets of the Southern Lake Wales Ridge, they found Nature can be full of comedy, drama, and beauty. Ashley and Miranda told us comical stories of friendly and unfriendly bugs. Their discoveries of menacing plants like Prickly Pear cactus and bold Florida Scrub-Jays. Led by an interdisciplinary team of researchers from Archbold Biological Station, the students designed independent research questions to study native plants. Watching Archbold biologists mentor these two curious, brave young women was heartwarming. In the end, they describe their summer nature immersion as ’totally worth it’. Through this experience of going deep into nature, these remarkable students see the scrub surrounding their homes with new eyes. These brilliant youth give us hope for the future.
